NEW CHANGE!!!!:
March 29-31:
Build a Pennsylvania Architectural Corner Cupboard with Gene
Landon, Part III- Last Part. We will complete the construction
of a Pennsylvania Architectural Corner Cupboard. This early
18th c cupboard would have been the focus of the room for which
it was made. Commanding attention, it went complete from floor
to the ceiling as part of the architecture of that room. You
will have the opportunity to alter yours so that it will
comfortably fit into a modern home and still be movable. F
eaturing Tombstone or Ogee raised panel doors on the lower
section, fluted or raised panel pilasters, arched glass upper
doors, and all the usual decorations that are appropriate.
Students provide their own tools and lumber. Class begins at
9am. Cost is $ 575.00.
April 12-14:
Build the Penn Chair, a Philadelphia French Open Arm Chair,
with Gene Landon, Part I. c 1766. Clement Conger,
in "Treasures of State", says, " Few pieces of furniture
indicate the magnificence to which Philadelphia's elite aspired
during the colonial period as well as this pair of armchairs.
At least nine chairs from this set survive….with a peaked
crest rail, gadrooned molding around the seat frame, and
Marlborough legs with matching carving." The originals built
by Thomas Affleck with carving probably subbed out to Bernard
and Jugiez certainly reflect Colonial Philadelphia's taste to
emulate Englishman Thomas Chippendale's designs. Students
provide their own tools and lumber. Class begins at 9am.
Cost is $ 600.00. Please note that there are three parts to
this project, completed in 2008.
April 26-27:
Completion of a Federal Pembroke Table Part III, with Instructor Steve
Latta. Concentration will be focused on completion of the
inlay and banding as necessary and completion of the table
top. This has been a sweet project with Steve and group!
9am-5. Students bring their own tools and material. $300.00.
May 3-5:
Build the exceptional Logan Philadelphia Secretary Desk and
Bookcase with Gene Landon, Part I. c1740-50. This secretary
desk and bookcase is one of the most sophisticated designs
to come out of Philadelphia. The lower case has a complex
gallery, with carved shells and an intricate prospect. The
upper section of the bookcase displays many compartments,
carved drawers and another complex prospect. The tympanum
sports a wonderful Queen Anne carved shell and foliage, a
broken pediment with carved rosettes and carved flame finials.
Students provide their own tools and lumber. Class begins at
9am. Cost is $600.00. Please note that there are three parts
to this project in 2008 and an anticipated two to three parts
to be scheduled in 2009.

Build a Newport Rhode Island Tea Table Part I, with
Master Cabinetmaker Gene Landon. A rare Newport table, built
around 1760-1770, this mahogany tea table has a triangular
post with concave sides and fluted columns made from satinwood.
A concave door on that post opens to five graduated drawers
to store tea. The top is a turned, solid dish top that
rotates and tips. Downs notes in "American Furniture" that,
"No known piecrust edge tea table.....is known in Rhode
Island furniture." (reference 384). Cabriole feet terminating
in pad feet. Students provide their own tools and lumber.
Pie top turnings can be purchased separately from Charlie
in advance. Class begins at 9am. Cost is $ 600.00. Please
note that there are two parts to this project, completed in
2008.
June 12-13:
Bess Naylor of Olde Mill will teach Carve a Philadelphia
Claw and Ball Foot. Teaching by demonstration first and then

purchase Gene and Bess' booklet on how to carve these feet.

Build a Philadelphia William and Mary Dressing Table Part I, (Lowboy)
with Gene Landon. c1715-1725. This walnut Dressing Table,
also known in modern terms as a lowboy, is a spectacular
example of Philadelphia's version of William and Mary
construction. Early dressing tables were often covered with
some form of an embroidered or linen cover, though there is
a wooden top underneath. Beautiful turned legs and drop
finials, crossed profiled stretchers with a center pedestal
to display a special china vase. This class is a great way
to learn William and Mary construction details. Students
provide their own tools and lumber. Class begins at 9am.
Cost is $600.00. Please note that there are two parts to
this project, completed this year.
June 28-29:
Build your own Infill Shoulder Planes by Legacy Planeworks.
Enjoy a great weekend with Marty as he guides you through
building your own 3/4" or 1" infill shoulder plane. You will
leave this class with a completely functional shoulder plane.
The dovetailed kits have been refined to where the sole and
sides snap together, right out of the box, thus eliminating
hours of filing. With nothing more than "finesse" and a few
hand tools, you will pein the dovetails and bridge, cut and
shape the infills, assemble all the components and finish the
sides and sole. Next tune the plane and sharpen the A-2
cryo-treated iron. And then you will proudly show the world
your completed reproduction of an early 1800's infill shoulder
plane, dovetails and all that you will treasure for a lifetime.
Class fee is $125.00. The plane kit costs $425.00. Lunch
will be provided Saturday. Files will be available, at an
additional cost, if requested at class registration. You will
need to bring a ballpein hammer, safety glasses, 220 and 320
sandpaper, ear plugs and an anvil or a 6"x12"x''1/2" thick
steel plate. (If the anvil or plate is an issue, please let
me or Marty know 3 weeks in advance of the class.) Visit
Marty's web site to view the kit and finished planes at
www.legacyplanes.com. The Legacy Planeworks blog page
may be accessed at http://blog.legacyplanes.com any time.
July 12-14:
CHANGED!!!!! With Master Gene Landon leading the charge, Build a
Charleston High Poster Bed with Tester,
Part I. We have changed the bed we are going to build
to an outstanding Charleston bedstead. It will be very similar
to a bed pictured in the Downs book, though new research deems
it a southern bed. The turned, fluted foot posts connect to
cabriole legs that terminate in a substantial ball and claw foot.
There is acanthus carving on the knees. The headboard will have a
profile and the head posts are tapered. A tester (rhymes
with feaster) is the framework atop the posts that typically
supports a fabric or crocheted cover. Students provide their
own tools and lumber. Class begins at 9am. Cost is $600.00.
Please note that there are two parts to this project,
completed in 2008.
